Our Vision
For more than half of our lives, we have been performing together in this formation. Over the years, we have increasingly discovered what is most important to us artistically: to play and communicate music in a way that makes it feel alive - not as a relic of the past, but as something that moves and touches people here and now.
Driven by this conviction, we are deeply committed not only to the great masterpieces of past centuries but also to contemporary music. By combining both in many of our concert programmes, we aim to show that these seemingly different styles and musical languages share far more in common than one might initially assume.
For some time now, we have been commissioning works from wonderful composers who share this artistic vision with us, and we regularly perform their new pieces in our concerts. The concert programmes that have emerged from these collaborations are among our favourite and most personal projects, as they come especially close to our artistic ideal of a living connection between the “old” and the “new” - enriched by the very personal character of a work composed especially for us.
As these programmes are especially close to our hearts, we have captured some of them on CD.
Take a look:

Hardly any composer embodies the spirit of a new era as profoundly as Ludwig van Beethoven. During his lifetime, his music pushed beyond the boundaries of what had previously been known and was perceived as radically modern.
On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of his death in 2027, we developed the idea, together with Johannes X. Schachtner, of opening up a new perspective on Beethoven’s music by placing it in a new musical context. In early 2026, Johannes composed his Piano Trio No. 5 “In tiefer Ehrfurcht” especially for us, a work conceived to be heard between Beethoven’s early c minor Trio op. 1, 3 and his later “Archduke Trio” op. 97.
What becomes particularly clear is that each of these works embodies the spirit of something entirely new: the youthful, impetuous revolutionary energy of the c minor Trio, the unprecedented melodic breadth and symphonic richness of the “Archduke Trio”, and the entirely new sound worlds created by Johannes X. Schachtner.
This programme will be released on CD on 18 September 2026 by the Hänssler Classic label in collaboration with SWR Kultur.

... is both the title and the guiding idea behind this project, as well as the subtitle of Ursula Mamlok’s "Panta Rhei", the central work of the programme. The transitions between every piece have been carefully designed so that the pieces flow seamlessly into one another, as if time itself were in constant motion, entirely free from stylistic or historical boundaries. At the heart of the programme lies the search for connection within apparent contrast: a sequence of widely differing musical styles that flow naturally into one another.
Charles Ives’s eccentric and bizarre "Piano Trio" merges directly into Beethoven’s gently flowing "Allegretto" in B-flat major, followed by Mamlok’s "Panta Rhei", the work that embodies the programme’s central idea. From there, the journey continues into Brahms’s expansive "Trio in C major". The programme concludes with "vertrautes angezogensein", a quiet epilogue that Birke Bertelsmeier composed especially for us and this project in 2024. Weaving together quotations and echoes of all the preceding works, it carries the music into the present through its weightless, atmospheric sound world.
"Time in Flux" was released in 2025 on the GENUIN label in collaboration with Deutschlandfunk Kultur.
